When it is hot and forecasts predict hotter years ahead, we know we want air conditioning, but which kind do we choose? Campbells’ will walk you through the various options based on application and price point, but for background here is where we start.
Do you have existing ducting or are you willing to add? If so, below are the types of ducted air conditioning system.
Central Ducted Air Conditioner Systems and Heat Pumps:
- Central Air Conditioner: Uses ductwork to circulate cool air throughout the entire house. These are the most common systems you see on the side of a house and are electric powered.
- Air Source Heat Pump: Efficiently heats and cools by transferring heat between indoor and outdoor units. Electric powered. While this post is about air conditioning air source heat pumps can also down to -20F.
- Dual Fuel Heat Pump: Combines electric heat pump and gas furnace for optimal performance.
If you don’t have ducting, are unwilling or unable to add ducting then we recommend a ductless system.
Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump:
- Quieter than ducted systems– these are not your hotel type of systems.
- Energy-efficient, duct-free systems.
- Can be single- or multi-zoned (two zones have one unit inside, but share an outside unit)
- Types include wall-mounted, floor-mounted, ceiling-mounted, and cassette units.
Did we mention most energy efficient air conditioning systems may qualify for a tax credit? Air conditioning systems are rated on energy efficiency – categorized in various SEER levels such as SEER16. Here is a link to the IRS website on current federal initiatives.
